Life’s Long Grind: Psalm 39

Lord, you give and then you take,
What of this life shall I make?

Shall I spend my days in tears
Hiding from my darkest fears?

Or to walk with you so bold
All my days from young to old?

Will you let me cry and shout
Asking what this life’s about?
Do you want my tongue to cease,
Troubled days alone in peace?

Life so short, is that your plan?
Not just me, but every man—
Shadows, dust, a phantom’s life,
Days of good and days of strife.

How, Lord, can I seek and find
Pleasures on this life’s long grind?
Or are pleasures only found
After you our life have ground?

Do you want me on my knees,
Folded hands, will you that please?
Do you want my head bowed low,
Humble life for me to know?

Lord, I know my life is short,
Ending days will soon report.
Help me know the way to live
That to you will pleasure give.

Lord, you give, and then you take,
Most of this life help me make.
