False Tears: Psalm 81

How often have I filled my ears
   With pleasures and with things
And thus have lost too many years
Your songs I did not sing.

I used to hear your voice speak clear
   And follow in your ways,
Your presence seemed so very near
   And with me every day.

But when dark pleasures became dear
   My hearing was impaired,
Your holy voice became unclear
And my heart’s love was shared.

A heart that shares its love appears
   To be so rich indeed.
But to be true its nerves are seared
   And love turns into need.

And what was once a loving tear
Shed for the heart of God
Has turned into a selfish fear
   Of losing idol’s fraud.

Lord, silence all the empty cheer
With its loud din raised high,
And in the quiet let me hear
   Your holy loving sigh.
