Lighted Caves: Psalm 63

Cold night air and howling wind
Empty waste; in cave I’m pinned.
Foes pursuing through dry land,
Enemy with unjust hand.
Stomach growling, food long gone
Wineskins cracked and parched lips drawn—

Can I still rejoice in thee
And the love you’ve shown to me?
Mem’ries of you in the night
Awesome power, glory’s light.
Can dry lips still sing your praise
While I wait for joyful days?

But those moments when your light
Enters dark cave, making bright,
In black hole where now I live
Praise of steadfast love I’ll give.
Empty pangs will fade away,
Satisfied by you that day.

Let the thoughts of glory then
Help me now in darkened den,
Help me through my deepest pains
While my enemy still reigns.
Help my longing heart to know
Heaven’s presence here below.
