Living Rock and Empty Hole: Psalm 53

The words of lips may often part
From uttered phrases of the heart.
The speech that rolls off silky tongue
Oft’ won’t compare to heart’s verse sung,
For deep within the honest soul
Is living rock and empty hole.

From empty hole comes speech and hand
Denying he who rules the land,
Denying he who sits above,
Denying Son who died in love,
And all its works and words so fine
Won’t save this godless heart of mine.

But also in my heart I hold
The living rock from which I’m told
Redeem my words and works it will,
Redeem my heart and even still,
Redeem my life from terror’s cry,
And then no shame for when I die.

O, that my verse won’t make of me
A fool for all around to see.
Lord, keep my tongue and mold my way
So that my words and heart will say,
“There is a God above us all
Who every knee before will fall.
Now let my heart hear holy call
To enter his eternal hall.”
