Night Dialogues: Psalm 77

My heart breaks at midnight hour
    And hidden tears appear,
In my weak and dwind’ling power
    I want you ever near.

But silent heaven is my bed
    And lonely time my sheet
Like shrouds that cover one who’s dead
    Who speaks this final bleat,

“Why ever do my troubles mount
Like mound on fresh dug grave?
And why will you not them surmount
    And from death’s battle save?

Why can’t I see your works of old
Flash on my mind’s blank screen?
No strength or love did you withhold
    From those of righteous mien.”

“You must remember that my love
    Is not constrained by time.
It ever flows from me above
    Perfectly and sublime.”

“You know my eyes are not so clear,
    They’re filled with selfish flow.
You know I can’t see how you’re near
And that you love me so.”

“I want to show you what I’ve done
Now and in days long past,
And all the vict’ries I have won
    With my strong love steadfast.

I’ll give you strength from my past ways
And grant you night’s sweet sleep,
Then in your dark and lonely days,
I’ll show that you I keep.”
