Chains of Longing: Psalm 42

Links I’ve added one by one
    Drag down my lonely heart.
Into shadow from the sun
I from my joy did part.

Lips of mine once sang so free
New songs for all to hear.
Choices took me far from thee
    Where darkness gathers near.

Links were forged each step I took
And long have grown my chains,
Weighing down this soul that looks
    At all my self-made pains.

Eyes cast low yet long to rise
    To see your holy face,
But the chains I now despise
    Keep me from seeing grace.

In the dark I know it’s true
That I have forged each link,
Even so, I long for you
    While weighted soul doth sink.

Let your painful hammer fall
    And cut each link away.
Freely then my voice will call
    To you in dawning day.
