Psalm 123: Into the Light

Mercy oft I long from you,
 Yet, I frequent evil do.

Evil heart is deep within -
It’s the cause of all my sin.

Eyes I lift to heaven high -
 Holy throne above the sky.

But in dark on earth I stay
 Hiding from the holy ray.

Ray of light from holy heights
 Longing to shed mercy’s light,

But I deep in shadows stand,
Shame that keeps me from his land -

Pushed me far from holy crown,
Hands of shame still drag me down

To a low and scornful place
Where in shame I hide my face.

Yet I hear in dark and cold
 Soothing whisper ever bold,

“Won’t you come to seek my face?
Won’t you come to holy place?

 Step from under shadow’s fall,
Reach for me and hear my call,

Won’t you come to see the Son?
Won’t you turn from shameful run?”

Long I’ve run from mercy full
To a dark and hellish hole,

Yet he’s tracked me where I roam,
Calling now to bring me home.
