Psalm 144: Dawn

Breath of God, life of man,
     breathing in, breathing out...
 Shadows pass, none can stand,
     shadows low, going out...

 Lord holds back enemies,
     breathing in, breathing out...
 Lord calms dark stormy seas,
     shadows low, going out...

Man is blessed with good life,
     breathing in, breathing out...
 Fortress from war and strife,
     shadows low, going out...

     But oft I find
     that life can grind
     even those of holy mind.

     And oft I see
     evil can be
     firmly planted like a tree.

     And long it lives
     and often gives
painful days to men of his.

     So why do I
     seek holy eye
to shine blessings from on high

     if breath and light
     and shadows plight
is the length of earthly flight?

 Blessed of God, simple son,
     breathing in, breathing out...
To your lap do I run,
     shadows low, going out...

 Held so tight, holy arms,
     breathing in, breathing out...
Keep me safe from all harms,
     shadows low, going out...

 Words anew, through the land,
     breathing in, breathing out...
 Shadows fly, life’s short span,
     shadows low, now gone out.
